Recap of the 2011-12 NHL Awards

The NHL awards were announced on June 20th and here I will give my thoughts.
Hart Memorial Trophy (MVP in regular season): This award was won by Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers and Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning were the other finalists. This is the first time Malkin won this award. Malkin led the NHL in points with 109. He was second in the NHL in goals with 50 and tied for 3rd in assists with 59. Malkin helped his team have the 4th best record in the NHL with 108 points. Lundqvist was tied for 4th in the NHL in GAA at 1.97. He was 3rd in the NHL in wins with 39 and tied for 3rd in save percentage at 93.0%. Lundqvist helped his team tie for the 2nd best record in the NHL with 109 points. Stamkos was 2nd in the NHL in points with 97. He was led in the NHL in goals with 60 and tied for 49th in assists with 37. Stamkos helped his team tied for the 21st best record in the NHL with 84 points. I agree with Malkin winning this award. He also won the Ted Lindsay Award for being the most outstanding player.
Vezina Trophy (best goaltender): This award was won by Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers. Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings and Pekka Rinne of the Nashville Predators were the other finalists. This is the first time Lundqvist won this award. Lundqvist was tied for 4th in the NHL in GAA at 1.97. He was 3rd in the NHL in wins with 39 and tied for 3rd in save percentage at 93.0%. Quick was 2nd in the NHL in GAA at 1.95. He was tied of 5th in the NHL in wins with 35 and was 5th in save percentage at 92.9%. Rinne was 14th in the NHL in GAA at 2.39. He was tied of led the NHL in wins with 43 and was 7th in save percentage at 92.3%. I agree with Lindqvist winning this award.
James Norris Memorial Trophy (best defensive player): This award was won by Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators. Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins and Shea Weber of the Nashville Predators were the other finalists. This is the first time Karlsson won this award. Karlsson was tied for 369th in hits with 60 and was tied for 187th in blocked shots with 65. He was tied for 48th in plus/minus his was +16. Chara was  58th in hits with 166 and was 123th in blocked shots with 87. He was tied for 3rd in plus/minus his was +33. Weber was tied for 43th in hits with 177 and was tied for 35th in blocked shots with 140. He was tied for 19th in plus/minus his was +21. I thought Chara deserved this award more than Karlsson. Chara also has won this award before winning in 2008-09 season.
Frank J. Selke Trophy (best defensive forward): This award was won by Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins. David Backes of the St. Louis Blues and Davel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings were the other finalists. Bergeron was tied 185th among forwards in hits with 73 and tied for 17th among forwards in blocked shots with 67. He also lead all players in plus/minus at +36. Backes was tied 12th among forwards in hits in 226 and tied for tied 12th among forwards in blocked shots with 72. He was tied for 35th in plus/minus among forward at +15. Datsyuk was tied 178th among forwards in hits in 76 and tied for tied 161st among forwards in blocked shots with 31 . He was tied for 13th in plus/minus among forward at +21. I thought David Backes should have won this award.
Calder Memorial Trophy (best rookie): This award was won by Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanche. He is 19 and was the 2nd overall pick in the 2011 NHL draft. Adam Henrique of the New Jersey Devils and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of the Edmonton Oilers. Landeskog scored 52 points which was tied among all rookies. He also scored 22 goals which was 2nd among rookies and 30 assists which was 3rd among rookies. Henrique is 22 and was the 82nd overall pick in the 2008 NHL draft. He scored 51 points was 3rd among rookies. He also scored 16 goals which was 6th among rookies and 35 assists which was 1st among rookies. Nugent-Hopkins is 19 and was the 1st overall pick in the 2011 NHL draft. He scored 52 points was tied for 1st among rookies. He also scored 18 goals which was 4th among rookies and 34 assists which was 2nd among rookies. I agree with Landeskog winning this award. All three guys look to have bright futures in the NHL.

Recap of the 2012 NBA Finals: Miami Heat are the 2012 NBA Champions

The Miami Heat beat the Oklahoma City Thunder in 5 games to win the 2012 NBA Championship. LeBron James finally won is long awaited NBA Championship. Chris Bosh also got his 1st ring and Dwyane Wade won his 2nd NBA Championship winning with the Heat also in 2006. LeBron James won the Finals MVP while averaging 28.6 PPG, 10.2 RPG and 7.4 APG. He became the first player since Tim Duncan to win the NBA MVP and Finals MVP in the same season. Duncan did it last in 2003. LeBron also had the 5th most points in a single postseason with 697 points. Jordan holds the record when he scored 759 points in the 1992 NBA Playoffs. The Thunder won Game 1 had home 105-94. After that game the Heat won the next 4 games to win the series in 5 games. The Heat won Game 2 100-96; Game 3 91-85; Game 4 104-98 and Game 5 121-106. The middle three games were very closing coming down to the last minute. The Heat became the 3rd team since the NBA went to a 2-3-2 format in the Finals to win the middle three games at home. They join the 2004 Pistons and 2006 Heat to do that. LeBron also became the 6th player to record a triple-double in the clinching game of the Finals. In Game 5 he had 26 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists. I think the Heat and Thunder Finals could turn into the Lakers and Celtics Finals in the 1980s. The Lakers and Celtics meet in the NBA Finals every from 1984 to 1987 except in 1986. The Lakers of the Celtics were in the Finals every year from 1980 to 1989. I expect the two teams to meet for most of the next years until 2016 when the Heat's Big Three's contract expire. LeBron quiet in the haters some since he won and now people can't say he never won but to completely quiet the haters he will have to win probably 4-5 or more NBA Championships. I very happy for LeBron and he can focus on continue winning rather than worrying about getting #1.

Matt Cain Throws 22nd Perfect Game In MLB History

On Wednesday, Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants pitched the 22nd perfect game in MLB history. He set down all 27 Astro batters winning the game 10-0. It is the first perfect game since Philip Humber's April 21st this year. His perfect was also the 277th no-hitter in MLB history. This is the Giants' first perfect game in team history and first no-hitter for the Giants since Jonathan Sanchez in 2009. This is only the third year ever with 2 perfect games in one year. In 2010 when Halladay and Braden did it and in 1880 when Lee Richmond and Mike Montgomery did it. Cain tied the record for strikeouts in a perfect game with 14 tying him and Sandy Koufax. In the game Cain record 14 strikeouts, 7 flyoyts and 6 groundouts. Cain also set a record with 125 pitches most in any perfect game. This is also the 7th perfect game in the past 8 years. Cain's perfect game makes it 5 no-hitters on season most to this point of the season since 1917 when they had 5 May 6. In 1917 the year ended with 6 no-hitters. This year has a chance to have 7 or 8 since we are only about half way done with the season. Cain joins Philip Humber, Jered Weaver, Johan Santana and the 6 Mariners (Kevin Milwood, Charlie Furbush, Stephen Pryor, Lucas Luetge, Brandon League and Tom Wilhelmsen) to throw a no-hitter this year. The Mariners picthers pitched only the 10th ever combined no-hitter in MLB history on June 8th. According to Bill James' game score statistic, Cain's perfect game is tied with Sandy Koufax's perfect game for the most dominate in the perfect game in the MLB modern-era. Cain has a strong right now to win the NL Cy Young Award and possibly the NL Pitching Triple Crown he has 8 wins (tied for 4th in NL) with a ERA of 2.18 (2nd in the NL) and has 96 strikeouts (2nd in the NL).

Recap of the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals: Los Angeles Kings are the 2012 Stanley Cup Champions

The Los Angeles Kings beat the New Jersey Devils in 6 games to win the Stanley Cup. This the first Stanley Cup Chmapionship in the King's 45 year history. The Kings won the first three games of the series, New Jersey won Game 4 and Game 5 and Los Angeles won Game 6 at home to win the series 4 games to 2. Los Angeles finished with a 10-1 on the road in the playoffs the only loss coming in Game 5 which is amazing for #8 seed. Also Los Angeles became the only #8 seed to win the Stanley Cup and lowest seed ever has well. Jonathan Quick won the Conn Smythe Trophy for being the MVP of the playoffs. Quick had a record of 16-4 in the playoffs and he set NHL records for save percentage his was 94.6% and goals-against average his 1.41 in the playoffs who played at least 15 playoff games. Quick becomes only the 16th goalie to win this award out of 46 players to win the award. Dustin Brown also became only the second American-born captain ever to win the Stanley Cup. Brown had a great playoffs has well, leading the NHL in points with 20, goals with 8 and plus/minus at +16. Anze Kopitar had all of the same stats as well. Los Angeles has a good chance of repeating next year. The also have a great chance to win their division next year after coming in 3rd place with 95 points only 2 points behind the Coyotes who won the division. New Jersey will probably have a much harder time making it back to the Stanley Cup Finals after finishing 4th in the stacked Atlantic Division behind the Rangers, Penguins and Flyers.

Preview of the 2012 NBA Finals: Miami Heat vs. Oklahoma City Thunder

The Miami Heat and the Oklahoma City Thunder will face each other in the 2012 NBA Finals. The Heat won the Eastern Conference going 12-6. They beat the Knicks in 5 games in the Conference Quarter-Finals, the Pacers in 6 games in the Conference Semi-Finals and the Celtics in 7 games to in the Conference Finals to advance to the NBA Finals. The Oklahoma City Thunder won the Western Conference going 12-3. They beat the Mavericks in 4 games in the Conference Quarter-Finals, the Lakers in 5 games in the Conference Semi-Finals and the Spurs in 6 games in the Conference Finals to advance to the NBA Finals. This is the Heat's 2nd straight NBA Finals after losing to the Mavericks in 6 games last year and third in franchise history making it in 2006, 2011 and 2012. The Heat will try to win their 2nd NBA Championship in team history only winning before in 2006 when they beat the Mavericks in 6 games. This is the Thunder's 4th NBA Finals and first since the team moved from Seattle to Oklahoma City. The made the Finals in 1978, 1979, 1996 and 2012. The Thunder will try to win their 2nd NBA Championship in team history only winning in 1979 when they beat the Washington Bullets in 5 games. For the Heat this is LeBron James' and Dwyane Wade's 3rd NBA Finals and LeBron will try to finally winning that elusive NBA Championship. Dwyane Wade will look to win his 2nd NBA Title. Chris Bosh is making his 2nd NBA Finals appearance. For the Thunder Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden are making their 1st ever appearance in the NBA Finals after making the Western Conference Finals two years in a row and last year losing to the Mavericks in 5 games. This series should be very entertaining to watch the see Miami's Big Three go against the Oklahoma City's Big Three. The best match-up to watch will be LeBron vs. Durant who were 1st in 2nd in the MVP voting, 1st and 2nd best players in the NBA and 1st and 2nd best Small Forwards in the NBA. This Finals reminds me a lot of the 1992 Finals when it was Jordan and the Bulls vs. Drexler and the Blazers. Jordan and Drexler were were 1st in 2nd in the MVP voting in 1992, 1st and 2nd best players in the NBA in 1992 and 1st and 2nd best Shooting Guards in the NBA in 1992. LeBron and Durant are both having great scoring playoffs. LeBron leads the NBA during the playoffs at 30.8 PPG and Durant is 3rd with 27.8 PPG. Oklahoma City has home-court advantage since the Thunder won 47 games and the Heat won 46 games. Here is my game by game predictions:

Game 1: Miami @ Oklahoma City: MIA 104 - OKC 97; Miami leads the series 1-0.
Game 2: Miami @ Oklahoma City: OKC 97 - MIA 93; Series is tied at 1-1.
Game 3: Oklahoma City @ Miami: MIA 94 - OKC 89; Miami leads the series 2-1.
Game 4: Oklahoma City @ Miami: OKC 99 - MIA 98 OT; Series is tied at 2-2.
Game 5: Oklahoma City @ Miami: MIA 98 - OKC 95; Miami leads the series 3-2.
Game 6: Miami @ Oklahoma City: MIA 96- OKC 94 OT; Miami wins the series 4-2.
Miami Heat are the 2012 NBA Finals Champions.
LeBron James is the 2012 NBA Finals MVP. He averaged 31.0 PPG, 10.2 RPG and 6.8 APG.

Recap of the 2011-12 NBA Awards

NBA MVP: LeBron James from the Miami Heat won the 2011-12 NBA MVP. LeBron was a clear favorite with Kevin Durant very close. LeBron won with 1074 points and 85 of the 121 first place votes. Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder came in 2nd with 889 points and 24 of the 121 first place votes. Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers came in 3rd with 385 points and 6 of the 121 first place votes. Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers came in 4th with 352 points and 2 of the 121 first place votes. Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs came in 5th with 331 points and 4 of the 121 first place votes. This is the third time LeBron has won the NBA MVP previously winning in 2009 and 2010 when he played in Cleveland. He enters the company of Kareem, Jordan, Russell, Wilt, Moses Malone, Bird and Magic to the MVP 3 times. He also was the first player since Magic Johnson to win 3 MVPs in 4 season span. Magic won in 1987, 1989, 1990. In the regular season LeBron averaged 27.1 PPG (3rd in the NBA), 7.9 RPG (tied for 25th in the NBA) and 6.2 APG (13th in the NBA). He shoot a career high 53.1 field goal percentage (12 in the NBA). He also average 1.9 SPG (3rd in the NBA) and also led the NBA in PER with a 30.80 rating 3.71 points ahead of Chris Paul was 2nd in PER. This award choice was perfect. LeBron only has played 9 season and with 3 MVPs all ready he should be able to catch with Kareem who has 6 MVPs.

NBA Defensive Player of the Year: Tyson Chandler from the New York Knicks won this award. This is Chandler first time winning this award. He broke Dwight Howard's streak of 3 in a row. Tyson Chandler won this award with 311 points and 45 out of 121 first place votes. Serge Ibaka of the Oklahoma City Thunder came in 2nd with 294 points and 41 out of the 121 first place votes. Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic came in 3rd with 186 points and 18 out of the 121 first place votes. LeBron James of the Miami Heat came in 4th with 112 points and 7 out of the 121 first place votes. Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics came in 5th with 44 points and 2 out of the 121 first place votes.
I thought Serge Ibaka should had won this award. Ibaka led the NBA in blocks with 3.7 per game and Chandler only averaged 1.4 per game and came in 19th in the NBA. Chandler did average 6.5 DRPG compared to Ibaka just 4.6. Chandler did make a big culture change in New York after signing there as a free agent after playing in Dallas last year. The Knicks went from a very bad defensive team to one of the better teams with Chandler help. I don't see Chandler repeating next year or winning this award again.

NBA Rookie of the Year: Kyrie Irving from the Cleveland Cavaliers won this award. He is the first Cavalier to win this award since LeBron James in 2004. Kyrie Irving won this award with 117 put of the 120 first place votes and 592 points. Ricky Rubio of the Minnesota Timberwolves came in 2nd with 170 points, Kenneth Faired of the Denver Nuggets came in 3rd with 1 first place vote of 120 and 129 points. Kawhi Leonard of the San Antonio Spurs came in 4th with 1 first place vote of 120 and 47 points and Iman Shumpert of the New York Knicks came in 5th with 1 first place vote of 120 with 33 points. Kyrie Irving was clearly the best rookie this season after the Cavaliers toke with the #1 pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. He led all rookies in scoring averaging 18.5 PPG, the closest person was Brandon Knight at 12.8 PPG. He was also 2nd in assist with 5.4 APG only behind Rubio with 8.2 APG. He was also 16th among rookies in rebounds averaging 3.7 RPG. He also 11th among rookie shooting 46.9%. He also help Cleveland improve slightly. The Cavaliers went 19-63 with a 23.2 winning percentage but this year they went 21-45 with a 31.8 winning percentage. Kyrie Irving develop into one of the best point guards over the next decade and should make some All-Star Games and maybe a MVP or All-NBA Team Selections. I agree completely with Kyrie Irving winning this award.

NBA Sixth Man of the Year: James Harden from the Oklahoma City Thunder won this award. James Harden won this award 115 of the 119 first places earning 584 points. Louis Williams of the Philadelphia 76ers came in 2nd with 3 first place votes of 119 and 231 points. Jason Terry of the Dallas Mavericks came 3rd with 81 points and Al Harrington of the Denver Nuggets came in 4th with 42 points. Manu Ginobili of San Antonio Spurs and Taj Gibson of the Chicago Bulls tied for 5th with 28 points and Gibson got 1 first place vote out 119. James Harden led all NBA reserves in scoring with 16.8 PPG and came off the bench in 60 of 62 games he appeared in. Kevin Duarnt, Russell Westbrook and Harden helped Oklahoma City finish with the NBA's third-best record going 47-19. He scored in 10 or more in 58 of 62 game he played and averaged 4.1 RPG and 3.7 APG in 31.4 MPG. He scored 20 points or more in 15 games, with the Thunder going 14-1 in those games. His season high was 33 points. He shot 49.1%, 84.6% from the free throw line and 39.0% from three-point range. I agree with James Harden getting this award.

NBA Most Improved Player of the Year: Ryan Anderson from the Orlando Magic won this award. Ryan Anderson won this award with 33 of the 121 first place votes and 260 points. Ersan Ilyasova of the Milwaukee Bucks came in 2nd with 21 of the 121 first place votes and 159 points. Nikola Pekovic of the Minnesota Timberwolves came in 3rd with 10 of the 121 first place votes and 104 points. Andrew Bynum of the Los Angeles Lakers came in 4th with 14 of the 121 first place votes and 101 points. Greg Monroe came in 5th with 10 of the 121 first place votes and 96 points. Ryan Anderson had a very good improvement from his last season. He increased his PPG from 10.6 to 16.1, his RPG from 5.5 to 7.7 and his free throw percent from 81.2% to 87.7%. He also led the NBA in 3 points made and attempted with 166 made on 422 attempts shooting 39.2%. I thought Andrew Bynum should won this award. He improve a lot of was the starting center of the Western Conference All-Star Team. Ryan Anderson is now one of the best 3 point shooters in the game but besides that his game isn't that great.

All-NBA First Team: The All-NBA 1st Team included LeBron James from the Miami Heat, Kevin Durant from the Oklahoma City Thunder, Kobe Bryant from the Los Angeles Lakers, Chris Paul from the Los Angeles Clippers and Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic. LeBron got 118 from the 120 first place votes and 596 points. This is LeBron's 8th All-NBA Team selection, his 6th First Team selection and 5th straight since 2008. Durant got 117 of the 120 first place votes and 591 points. This is Durant's 3rd All-NBA Team selection, his 3rd First Team selection and 3rd straight since 2010. This is Kobe's 14th All-NBA Team selection (tied for 2nd most all-time), his 10th First Team selection (tied for 2nd most all-time) and 7th straight since 2006. Chris Paul got 74 of the 120 first place votes and 484 points. This is Chris Paul's 4th All-NBA Team selection, his 2nd First Team selection and 1st First Team selection since 2008. Dwight got 75 of the 120 first place votes and 476 points. This is Dwight's 6th All-NBA Team selection, his 5th First Team selection and 5th straight since 2008. LeBron averaged 27.1 PPG (3rd in the NBA), 6.2 APG (13th in the NBA), 7.9 RPG (25th in the NBA) and 1.9 SPG (3rd in the NBA). He also shoot 53.1% (12th in the NBA) and his PER was 30.80 (1st in the NBA). Durnat averaged 28.0 PPG (1st in the NBA), 3.5 APG, 8.0 RPG (24th in the NBA) and 1.3 SPG (Tied for 22nd in the NBA). He also shoot 49.6% (22nd in the NBA) and his PER was 26.26 (4th in the NBA). Kobe averaged 27.9 PPG (2nd in the NBA), 4.6 APG (25th in the NBA), 5.4 RPG and 1.2 SPG. He also shoot 43.0% and his PER was 21.95 (14th in the NBA). Chris Paul averaged 19.8 PPG (13th in the NBA), 9.1 APG (3rd in the NBA), 3.6 RPG and 2.5 SPG (1st in the NBA). He also shoot 47.8% (12th in the NBA) and his PER was 27.09 (2nd in the NBA). Dwight averaged 20.6 PPG, 1.9 APG, 14.5 RPG (1st in the NBA), 1.5 SPG, and 2.1 BPG (3rd in the NBA). He also shoot 57.3% (2nd in the NBA) and his PER was 24.29 (6th in the NBA). I agree with all five members of the All-NBA First Team.

All-NBA Second Team: The All-NBA 2nd Team included Andrew Bynum from the Los Angeles Lakers, Tony Parker from the San Antonio Spurs, Kevin Love from the Minnesota Timberwolves, Russell Westbrook from the Oklahoma City Thunder and Blake Griffin from the Los Angeles Clippers. Bynum got 33 from the 120 first place votes and 400 points. This is Bynum's 1st All-NBA Team selection and his 1st Second Team selection. Tony Parker got 41 of the 120 first place votes and 367 points. This is Parker's 2nd All-NBA Team selection and his 1st Second Team selection. Kevin Love got 16 of the 120 first place votes and 365 points. This is Love's 1st All-NBA Team selection and his 1st Second Team selection. Westbrook got 5 of the 120 first place votes and 239 points. This is Westbrook's 2nd All-NBA Team selection, his 2nd Second Team selection and 2nd straight Second Team selection since 2011. Russell Westbrook averaged 23.6 PPG (5th in the NBA), 5.5 APG (Tied for 16th in the NBA), 4.6 RPG and 1.7 SPG (8th in the NBA). He also shoot 45.7% and his PER was 23.00 (Tied for 10th in the NBA). Griffin averaged 20.7 PPG (10th in the NBA), 3.2 APG, 10.9 RPG (6th in the NBA) and 0.8 SPG. He also shoot 54.9% (7th in the NBA) and his PER was 23.50 (8th in the NBA). I agree with all five members of the All-NBA Second Team.

All-NBA Third Team: The All-NBA 3rd Team included Dwyane Wade from the Miami Heat, Carmelo Anthony from the New York Knicks, Rajon Rondo from the Boston Celtics, Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks and Tyson Chandler from the New York Knicks. I agree with Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Rajon Rondo making Third Team, but I thought LaMarcus Aldridge and Marc Gasol should had made All-NBA Third Team instead of Dirk Nowitzki and Tyson Chandler.

NBA All-Defensive First Team: The NBA All-Defensive 1st Team included LeBron James from the Miami Heat, Serge Ibaka from the Oklahoma City Thunder, Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic, Chris Paul from the Los Angeles Clippers and Tony Allen from the Memphis Grizzlies. Chandler got 13 of the 30 first place votes and 36 points. Chandler is the third NBA Defensive Player of the Year to make the All-Defensive Second Team. The other 2 players were Mutombo in 1995 and Alvin Robertson in 1986. I find this really weird but I didn't think Chandler should have won Defensive Player of the Year award anyway. This is Chandler's 2nd All-Defensive Team selection, his 2nd All-Defensive Second Team selection and his 2nd straight All-Defensive Second Team since 2011. He also shoot 41.5% (11th among the rookies) and his PER was 11.79. I wouldn't have put Brandon Knight or Iman Shumpert on my All-Rookie 1st team but beacause of the tied all agree with all the members on the NBA All-Rookie 1st Team.

NBA All-Rookie Second Team: The NBA All-Rookie 2nd Team included Chandler Parsons from the Houston Rockets, Isaiah Thomas from the Sacramento Kings, MarShon Brooks from the New Jersey Nets, Derrick Williams from the Minnesota Timberwolves and Tristan Thompson from the Cleveland Cavaliers.
