Recap of the 2012-13 NBA Awards

NBA MVP: LeBron James from the Miami Heat won the 2012-13 NBA MVP. LeBron was a clear favorite and almost became the 1st unanimous NBA MVP but came up 1 vote shy. LeBron won with 1207 points and 120 of the 121 first place votes. Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder came in 2nd with 765 points and 0 of the 121 first place votes. Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks came in 3rd with 475 points and 1 of the 121 first place votes. Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers came in 4th with 289 points and 0 of the 121 first place votes. Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers came in 5th with 184 points and 0 of the 121 first place votes. This is the fourth time LeBron has won the NBA MVP previously winning in 2009 and 2010 when he played in Cleveland and last season. He enters the elite company of Kareem, Jordan, Russell and Wilt to the MVP 4 times. He also only the 2nd player in NBA history to win 4 MVPs in 5 season span. Bill Russell is the only other player that achieved that feat. Russell won in 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1965. In the regular season LeBron averaged 26.8 PPG (4th in the NBA), 8.0 RPG (21st in the NBA) and 7.3 APG (tied for 10th in the NBA). He shoot a career high 56.5 field goal percentage (5th in the NBA). He also average 1.7 SPG (12th in the NBA) and also led the NBA in PER with a 31.67 rating 3.32 points ahead of Kevin Durant who was 2nd in PER. This award choice was perfect. LeBron only has played 10 season and with 4 MVPs he looks primed to catch Kareem who has 6 MVPs and pass him.

NBA Defensive Player of the Year: Marc Gasol from the Memphis Grizzlies won this award. This is Gasol's first time winning this award. Marc Gasol won this award with 212 points and 30 out of 121 first place votes. LeBron James of the Miami Heat came in 2nd with 149 points and 18 out of the 121 first place votes. Serge Ibaka of the Oklahoma City Thunder came in 3rd with 122 points and 14 out of the 121 first place votes. Joakim Noah of the Chicago Bulls came in 4th with 107 points and 13 out of the 121 first place votes.Tony Allen of the Memphis Grizzlies came in 5th with 102 points and 9 out of the 121 first place votes.
I thought LeBron James should had won this award. James averaged 6.8 DRPG which was 14th in the NBA and Gasol only averaged 5.5 DRPG which was 28th in the NBA. James also averaged 1.7 SPG which was 12th in the NBA and Gasol only averaged 1.0 SPG which was tied for 59th in the NBA. Gasol did average 1.7 BPG compared to James just 0.9. I don't understand why Gasol was picked for this award. James and Ibaka were much better choices. I don't see Gasol repeating next year or winning this award again.

NBA Rookie of the Year: Damian Lillard from the Portland Trail Blazers won this award. He is the first Trail Blazer to win this award since Brandon Roy in 2007. Damian Lillard won this award with 121 of the 121 first place votes and 605 points. Lillard became just the 4th player ever to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award unanimously. He joins Ralph Sampson, David Robinson and Blake Griffin has NBA players to win the Rookie of the Year award unanimously. Anthony Davis of the New Orleans Hornets came in 2nd with 306 points, Bradley Beal of the Washington Wizards came in 3rd with 94 points. Andre Drummond of the Detroit Pistons came in 4th with 36 points and Dion Waiters of the Cleveland Cavaliers came in 5th with 21 points. Damian Lillard was clearly the best rookie this season after the Trail Blazers toke with the #6 pick in the 2012 NBA Draft. He led all rookies in scoring averaging 19.0 PPG, the closest person was Anthony Davis at 14.7 PPG. He was also 1st in assist with 6.5 APG, the closest person was Alexey Shved at 3.7 APG. He was also 18th among rookies in rebounds averaging 3.1 RPG. He also 23rd among rookie shooting 42.9%. He also broke NBA Rookie record for 3 pointers in a player's rookie year. Damian Lillard looks like he will develop into one of the best point guards over the next decade and should make many All-Star Games and maybe win a MVP and should make All-NBA Team Selections. I agree completely with Damian Lillard winning this award.

NBA Sixth Man of the Year: J.R. Smith from the New York Knicks won this award. J.R. Smith won this award 72 of the 121 first places earning 484 points. Jamal Crawford of the Los Angeles Clippers came in 2nd with 31 first place votes of 121 and 352 points. Jarrett Jack of the Golden State Warriors came 3rd with 14 first place votes of 121 and 170 points. Kevin Martin of the Oklahoma City Thunder came in 4th with 2 first place votes of 121 and 31 points. Ryan Anderson of the New Orleans Hornets came in 5th with 1 first place vote of 121 and 11 points. J.R. Smith led all NBA reserves in scoring with 18.1 PPG and came off the bench in 80 of 80 games he appeared in. Along with Carmelo, he helped the Knicks earned the #2 seed in the East and their first playoff series victory since 2000. He also averaged 5.3 RPG and 2.7 APG in 33.5 MPG. He scored 20 points or more in 29 games. He shot 42.2%, 76.2% from the free throw line and 35.6% from three-point range. I agree with J.R. Smith getting this award.

NBA Most Improved Player of the Year: Paul George from the Indiana Pacers won this award. Paul George won this award with 52 of the 120 first place votes and 311 points. Greivis Vasquez of the New Orleans Hornets came in 2nd with 13 of the 120 first place votes and 146 points. Lrry Sanders of the Milwaukee Bucks came in 3rd with 10 of the 120 first place votes and 141 points. Nikola Vucevic of the Orlando Magic came in 4th with 10 of the 120 first place votes and 109 points. Jrue Holiday came in 5th with 10 of the 120 first place votes and 102 points. Paul George had a big increase in performance from last season thanks to Danny Granger missing much of the season. He increased his PPG from 12.1 to 17.4, his RPG from 5.6 to 7.6 and his APG from 2.4 to 4.1. His MPG also increased from 29.7 to 37.6 and he made his first All-Star game. I thought Stephen Curry was a far better choice for this award than Paul George. Curry came back from an injury and became one of the best player in the NBA. George showed good growth but it was a lot because of the Grnager injury. Despite Curry great numbers he was left off the All-Star team and only placed 8th in this award. Curry averaged more PPG, APG and shot the ball better from the field, from 3 and from the free line better. Curry averaged 22.9 PPG (7th in the NBA) and 6.9 APG (tied for 15th in the NBA). He shot 90.0% from the free throw line (2nd in the NBA) and shot 45.3% from three (3rd in the NBA). Don't forget Curry also broke the NBA record for most three pointers made in a single season with 272. George was not a bad pick, Curry was just way more deserving.

All-NBA First Team: The All-NBA 1st Team included LeBron James from the Miami Heat, Kevin Durant from the Oklahoma City Thunder, Kobe Bryant from the Los Angeles Lakers, Chris Paul from the Los Angeles Clippers and Tim Duncan from the San Antonio Spurs. LeBron got 119 of the 119 first place votes and 595 points. This is LeBron's 9th All-NBA Team selection, his 7th First Team selection and 6th straight since 2008. Durant got 102 of the 119 first place votes and 555 points. This is Durant's 4th All-NBA Team selection, his 4th First Team selection and 4th straight since 2010. Kobe got 91 of the 119 first place votes and 521 points. This is Kobe's 15th All-NBA Team selection (tied for most all-time), his 11th First Team selection (tied for most all-time) and 8th straight since 2006. Chris Paul got 97 of the 119 first place votes and 537 points. This is Chris Paul's 5th All-NBA Team selection, his 3rd First Team selection and 2nd straight since 2012. LeBron averaged 26.8 PPG (4th in the NBA), 7.3 APG (tied for 10th in the NBA), 8.0 RPG (21st in the NBA) and 1.7 SPG (12th in the NBA). He also shoot 51.0% and his PER was 28.35 (2nd in the NBA). Kobe averaged 27.3 PPG (3rd in the NBA), 6.0 APG (tied for 21st in the NBA), 5.6 RPG and 1.4 SPG. He also shoot 46.3% and his PER was 23.10 (tied for 10th in the NBA). Chris Paul averaged 16.9  PPG (13th in the NBA), 9.7 APG (2nd in the NBA), 3.7 RPG and 2.4 SPG (1st in the NBA). He also shoot 48.1% and his PER was 26.43 (3rd in the NBA). Duncan averaged 17.8 PPG (tied for 20th in NBA), 2.7 APG, 9.9 RPG (tied for 9th in the NBA) and 2.7 BPG (3rd in the NBA). He also shoot 50.2% and his PER was 24.45 (6th in the NBA). I agree with all five members of the All-NBA First Team.

All-NBA Second Team: The All-NBA 2nd Team included Carmelo Anthony from the New York Knicks, Tony Parker from the San Antonio Spurs, Marc Gasol from the Memphis Grizzlies, Russell Westbrook from the Oklahoma City Thunder and Blake Griffin from the Los Angeles Clippers. Carmelo got 24 from the 119 first place votes and 397 points. This is Carmelo's 6th All-NBA Team selection, his 2nd Second Team selection and 1st Second Team selection since 2010. Tony Parker got 16 of the 119 first place votes and 273 points. This is Parker's 3rd All-NBA Team selection, his 2nd Second Team selection and 2nd straight Second Team selection since 2012. Marc Gasol got 38 of the 119 first place votes and 295 points. This is Gasol's 1st All-NBA Team selection and his 1st Second Team selection. Westbrook got 20 of the 119 first place votes and 306 points. This is Westbrook's 3rd All-NBA Team selection, his 3rd Second Team selection and 3rd straight Second Team selection since 2011. Griffin got 132 points. This is Griffin's 2nd All-NBA Team selection, his 2nd Second Team selection and 2nd straight Second Team selection since 2012. Carmelo averaged 28.7 PPG (1st in the NBA), 2.6 APG, 6.9 RPG and 0.8 BPG. He also shoot 44.9% and his PER was 24.83 (4th in the NBA). Tony Parker averaged 20.3 PPG (10th in the NBA), 7.6 APG (6th in the NBA), 3.0 RPG and 0.8 SPG. He also shoot 52.2% (17th in the NBA) and his PER was 23.10 (tied for 9th in the NBA). Marc Gasol averaged 14.1 PPG, 4.0 APG, 7.8 RPG (23rd in the NBA) and 1.7 BPG (12th in the NBA). He also shoot 49.4% and his PER was 19.57. Russell Westbrook averaged 23.2 PPG (6th in the NBA), 7.4 APG (tied for 7th in the NBA), 5.2 RPG and 1.8 SPG (9th in the NBA). He also shoot 43.8% and his PER was 23.98 (8th in the NBA). Griffin averaged  18.0 PPG (19th in the NBA), 3.7 APG, 8.3 RPG (tied for 19th in the NBA) and 1.2 SPG. He also shoot 53.8% (13th in the NBA) and his PER was 22.44 (12th in the NBA). I agree with Carmelo Anthony, Tony Parker and Russell Westbrook making Second Team, but I thought David Lee (who made 3rd team) and Brook Lopez should had made All-NBA Second Team instead of Blake Griffin and Brook Lopez.
All-NBA Third Team: The All-NBA 3rd Team included Dwyane Wade from the Miami Heat, James Harden from the Houston Rockets, David Lee from the Golden State Warriors, Paul George of the Indiana Pacers and Dwight Howard from the Los Angeles Lakers. Wade got 3 of the 119 first place votes and 145 points. This is Wade's 8th All-NBA Team selection, his 3rd Third Team selection and 2nd straight Third Team selection since 2012. Harden got 5 of the 119 first place votes and 253 points. This is Harden's 1st All-NBA Team selection and his 1st Third Team selection. David Lee got  79 points. This is Lee's 1st All-NBA Team selection and his 1st Third Team selection. Paul George got 73 points. This is George's 1st All-NBA Team selection and his 1stThid Team selection. Dwight 17 of the 119 first place votes got 203 points. This is Howard's 7th All-NBA Team selection and his 1st Third Team selection since 2007. Wade averaged 21.2 PPG (8th in the NBA), 5.1 APG, 5.0 RPG,  and 1.9 SPG (6th in the NBA). He also shoot 52.1% (19th in the NBA) and his PER was 24.04 (7th in the NBA). Harden averaged 25.9 PPG (5th in the NBA), 5.8 APG (24th in the NBA), 4.9 RPG and 1.8 SPG (7th in the NBA). He also shoot 43.8% and his PER was 23.00 (11th in the NBA). Lee averaged 18.5 PPG, 3.5 APG, 11.2 RPG (tied for 4th in the NBA) and 0.8 SPG. He also shoot 51.9% (21st in the NBA) and his PER was 19.23. Paul George averaged 17.4 PPG (25th in the NBA), 4.1 APG, 7.6 RPG and 1.8 SPG (8th in the NBA). He also shoot 41.9% and his PER was 16.84. I agree with James Harden and Dwight Howard making Third Team, but I thought LaMarcus Aldridge, Stephen Curry and Blake Griffin (instead of 2nd team) should had made All-NBA Third Team instead of Paul George, Dwyane Wade and David Lee (should of been 2nd team).

NBA All-Defensive First Team: The NBA All-Defensive 1st Team included LeBron James from the Miami Heat, Serge Ibaka from the Oklahoma City Thunder, Tyson Chandler from the New York Knicks, Joakim Noah from the Chicago Bulls, Chris Paul from the Los Angeles Clippers and Tony Allen from the Memphis Grizzlies. LeBron got 25 of the 30 first place votes and 52 points. This is LeBron's 5th All-Defensive Team selection, his 5th All-Defensive First Team selection (tied for 12th all-time) and his 5th straight All-Defensive First Team since 2009. Ibaka got 17 of the 30 first place votes and 46 points. This is Ibaka's 2nd All-Defensive Team selection, his 2nd All-Defensive First Team selection and his 2nd straight All-Defensive First Team since 2012. Chandler got 9 of the 30 first place votes and 24 points. This Chandler's 3rd All-Defensive Team selection and his 1st All-Defensive First Team selection. Joakim Noah got 8 of the 30 first place votes and 24 points. This Noah's 2nd All-Defensive Team selection and his 1st All-Defensive First Team selection. Chris Paul got 15 of the 30 first place votes and 37 points. This Paul's 5th All-Defensive Team selection, his 3rd All-Defensive First Team selection and his 2nd straight All-Defensive First Team since 2012. Tony Allen got 25 of the 30 first place votes and 53 points. This Allen's 3rd All-Defensive Team selection, his 2nd All-Defensive First Team Selection and his 2nd straight All-Defensive First Team selection since 2012. LeBron averaged 6.8 DRPG (14th in the NBA), 1.7 SPG (12th in the NBA) and 0.9 BPG. Ibaka averaged 4.9 DRPG, 0.4 SPG and 3.0 BPG (1st in the NBA). Chandler averaged 6.6 DRPG (18th in the NBA), 0.6 SPG and 1.1 BPG (3rd in the NBA). Joakim Noah averaged 7.2 DRPG (tied for 10th in the NBA), 1.2 SPG and 2.1 BPG (6th in the NBA). Chris Paul averaged 3.0 DRPG, 2.4 SPG (1st in the NBA) and 0.1 BPG. Tony Allen averaged 3.1 DRPG, 1.5 SPG (tied for 21st in the NBA) and 0.6 BPG. I wouldn't have put Tyson Chandler on my All-Defensive 1st team but because of the tie, I agree with all the members on the NBA All-Defensive 1st Team.
NBA All-Defensive Second Team: The NBA All-Defensive 2nd Team included Tim Duncan from the San Antonio Spurs, Paul George from the Indiana Pacers, Marc Gasol from the Memphis Grizzlies, Avery Bradley from the Boston Celtics and Mike Conley from the Memphis Grizzlies. Duncan got 3 of the 30 first place votes and 20 points. This is Duncan's 14th All-Defensive Team selection, his 6th All-Defensive Second Team selection and his 1st All-Defensive Second Team since 2010. Paul George got 7 of the 30 first place votes and 27 points. This is George's 1st All-Defensive Team selection and his 1st All-Defensive Second Team selection. Gasol got 5 of the 30 first place votes and 12 points. Gasol is the fourth  and second straight NBA Defensive Player of the Year to make the All-Defensive Second Team. The other 2 players were Mutombo in 1995, Alvin Robertson in 1986 and Tyson Chandler in 2012. I find this really weird but I didn't think Gasol shouldn't have won Defensive Player of the Year award anyway. This Gasol's 1st All-Defensive Team selection and his 1st All-Defensive Second Team selection. Avery Bradley got 10 of the 30 first place votes and 25 points. This Bradley's 1st All-Defensive Team selection and his 1st All-Defensive Second Team selection. Mike Conley got 4 of the 30 first place votes and 19 points. This Conley's 1st All-Defensive Team selection and his 1st All-Defensive First Second selection. Duncan averaged 8.1 DRPG (5th in the NBA), 0.7 SPG and 2.7 BPG (3rd in the NBA). Paul George averaged 6.5 DRPG (18th in the NBA), 1.8 SPG (8th in the NBA) and 0.6 BPG. Gasol averaged 5.5 DRPG, 1.0 SPG and 1.7 BPG (12th in the NBA). Avery Bradley averaged 1.6 DRPG, 1.3 SPG and 0.4 BPG. Mike Conley averaged 2.3 DRPG, 2.2 SPG (3rd in the NBA) and 0.3 BPG. I agree with all the NBA All-Defensive Second Team.

NBA All-Rookie First Team: The NBA All-Rookie 1st Team included Damian Lillard from the Portland Trail Blazers, Bradley Beal from the Washington Wizards, Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Hornets, Dion Waiters from the Cleveland Cavaliers and Harrison Barnes from the Golden State Warriors. Lillard got 29 of the 30 first place votes and 58 points. Bradley Beal got 28 of the 30 first place votes and 57 points. Anthony Davis got 28 of the 30 first place votes and 57 points. Waiters got 21 of the 30 first place votes and 50 points. Harrison Barnes got 18 of the 30 first place votes and 47 points. Beal averaged 13.9 PPG (3rd among the rookies), 2.4 APG (8th among the rookies), 3.8 RPG (13th among the rookies) and 0.9 SPG (7th among the rookies). He also shoot 41.0% and his PER was 13.69 (15th among the rookies). He also shoot 51.6% (6th among the rookies) and his PER was 21.80 (1st among the rookies). Waiters averaged 14.7 PPG (2nd among the rookies), 3.0 APG (tied for 3rd among rookies), 2.4 RPG and 1.0 SPG (4th among the rookies). He also shoot 41.2% and his PER was 13.77 (14th among the rookies). Barnes averaged 9.2 PPG (5th among the rookies), 1.2 APG (tied for 13th among the rookies), 4.1 RPG (10th among the rookies) and 0.6 SPG (13th among the rookies). He also shoot 43.9% (17th among the rookies) and his PER was 11.08. I agree with all five members of the All-Rookie 1st Team.
NBA All-Rookie Second Team: The NBA All-Rookie 2nd Team included Andre Drummond from the Detroit Pistons, Jonas Valanciunas from the Toronto Raptors, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist from the Charlotte Bobcats, Kyle Singler from the Detroit Pistons and Tyler Zeller from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Drummond got 10 of the 30 first place votes and 35 points. Valanciunas got 6 of the 30 first place votes and 31 points. Kidd-Gilchrist got 3 of the 30 first place votes and 29 points. Singler got 1 of the 30 first place votes and 17 points. Tyler Zeller got 3 of the 30 first place votes and 15 points. He also shoot 60.8% (1st among the rookies) and his PER was 21.69 (2nd among the rookies). Singler averaged 8.8 PPG (8th among the rookies), 0.9 APG (19th among the rookies), 4.0 RPG (tied for 11th among the rookies) and 0.7 BPG (tied for 10th among the rookies). He also shoot 42.8% and his PER was 10.02. Tyler Zeller averaged 7.9 PPG (tied for 12th among the rookies), 1.2 APG (tied for 13th among the rookie), 5.7 RPG (6th among the rookies) and 0.9 BPG (5th among the rookies). He also shoot 43.8% (18th among the rookies) and his PER was 11.02. I agree with all five members of the All-Rookie 2nd Team.

The Cleveland Cavaliers Win The 2013 NBA Draft Lottery

The Cleveland Cavaliers won the 2013 NBA Draft Lottery and earned the #1 pick. They got the #1 pick for the first since 2011 when they selected Kyrie Irving and 2nd time in 3 years. They have also selected #1 overall in 1971 and 1986. Minnesota got 2nd pick instead of the 1st pick. The Washington Wizards moved up from 8th to the 3rd pick. The Bobcats moved down from the 2nd to the 4th pick. The Suns got 5th pick instead of 4th, the Pelicans got 6th pick instead of 5th, the Kings got 7th pick instead of 6th, the Pistons got 8th pick instead of 7th, the Timberwolves got 9th, the Trail Blazers got 10th, the 76ers got 11th, the Thunder got 12th because the Raptors pick didn't land in the Top 3, the Mavericks got 13th and the Jazz got 14th. Most people expect the Cavaliers will take Nerlens Noel from Kentucky with the #1 pick. Noel was excellent defender before he torn his ACL back in February. He needs to improve his offense game but he is still a very good prospect. Ben McLemore from Kansas and Otto Porter from Georgetown are also be considered for the #1 pick.
Here were the probabilities for the draft order for each team. Number in bold is the pick they received.
